I’m still exhausted (from my first teaching experience)

Yesterday I spent the morning volunteering at Pine Crest Elementary School’s ARTS DAY.  I taught 3rd -5th graders abstract art. For the last few months, I have been saving my paper towel rolls, bottle tops and lids, bubble wrap, and anything else I could find that would make fun and interesting stamps.  I was asked a few months ago if I would be wiling to teach an art class and my idea for the class was to teach the students that you don’t need to know how to draw or have fancy art making materials in order to create something fun and even beautiful.  I brought in some of my paintings which got lots of oohs and aahs and questions like “do you have your paintings in museums?”.  So cute.  I told them no, that I just do this for fun and that really I am just a beginner myself.  I think it went well.  ImageSome of the kids were really into it and some of course, just wanted to make a big mess. Paint was pretty much all over everything – mostly myself.  By the time I got home I was totally wiped out  but happy with how it went.  There are definitely things I would change for next year but overall I think it was a success. My dad taught these grades for over 30 years.  I don’t know how he or other teachers do it day in and day out.  It was exhausting.   ImageImage

About PainterPaige

I am an abstract painter living in the Washington, DC suburbs. I have always loved to create. I won my first art award in 3rd grade for my “Friends with Animals” poster. The prize was $3 and my poster was hung at city hall for a month. It was a huge deal back in elementary school. I started my first business, Paige’s Painted Floorcloths, in 2006 where I hand-painted canvas floorcloths and sold them on my website, paigespaintedfloorcloths.com and at local art shows. My site is still up and custom floorcloths are still available although I gave up selling at shows a couple of years ago. This past year, I picked up a paintbrush and fell in love with painting all over again. This time I decided to stick to abstract painting on canvas. I am loving every minute of it!
